Review Hootsuite 2.0 – The ultimate Twitter toolbox

Hootsuite logoHootsuite is the perfect online Twitter tool because the 2.0 version integrates services like stats, geographical tracking and groups in Twitter and also gives you the ability to administrate multiple Twitter accounts.

In case you’ve just landed this page and got a little bit confused, I strongly recommend you to read my Twitter.com – The Twitter power of Twitter.

Now, I had the chance to test the improoved version 2.0 of Hootsuite, a Twitter tool which tries to get the most of your tweets. At a first glance, I notice a few interesting features:

  • Twitter Groups. The 2.0 version lets you create groups of Twitter users which comes handy when you want to know what certain Twitter users you probably follow have to tweet.
  • Twitter Search. Straight from your dashboard you can search tweets and when you start inputting the words you want to look for a simple non-annoying box appears letting you know about the trending topics on Twitter.
  • Auto refresh. The auto refresh feature comes handy and it is customizable in some cases. You can set up the refresh rate to 1 minute, 5 minutes, 30 minutes etc. That’s cool.
  • Twitter stats. Probably one of the most interesting and useful feature of Hootsuite is the stats option. You can track your daily clicks of the links you tweet for each Twitter username you administrate. Plus, it has a geographical option where you can see the geographical positon of your clicks.
  • Ping.fm integration. For those of you who like online omnipresence and use services like Ping.fm, an online application which updates simultaneously your status on different social networks, Hootsuite is the right online application for you.
  • RSS/Atom feed. If you like reading favourite websites all in one place, Hootsuite gives you the ability to integrate a website’s feed to display its fresh content for you. The FEED address can either be RSS or Atom. Learn more about RSS and how does it influence the web.
  • Team workflow. “Have a company or organization with more than one contributor? HootSuite is still making it easy to manage multiple users over various Twitter accounts.”

Ok. After giving you a summary of the things you can do in Hootsuite, I’m going to take this discussion even further and let you know about my experience with Hootsuite, a few likes and dislikes if you preffer.

Coloumns and tabs in Hootsuite
Let me get started by saying I find Hootsuite’s way of giving the ability to create a coloumn for each prefference very useful. I can scroll the horizontal bar to check new content or I can just click on the tabs I’ve created in Hootsuite. Even though this feature might be present in other Twitter applications too, I really appreciate Hootsuite for trying its best. You can create up to 6 coloumns and you can easily rearrange them to fit your needs.
Hootsuite - Coloumns feature
Keyword tracking coloumn
In Hootsuite you can track up to 3 keywords. Actually, these keywords reffere to brands such as Microsoft.
Search coloumn
So, I can create a special coloumn in Hootsuite when it comes to Searching Twitter. That’s a nice feature, it displays the content based on Twitter search. I also think it’s a good idea Hootsuite thought about giving examples of search, specific Twitter search. I wanted for example to get updates each time the “moldova election” keywords appeared in worldwide Twitter conversations.
Hootsuite - Search feature
Embedable Coloumn
For example, in your Hottsuite account you create a coloumn which shows the latest tweets from a certain Twitter user account, a profile Twitter feed column. With the new Embedable Coloumn feature of Hootsuite, a code for your website can be generated so you can display your favourite Twitter content directly to you website.
Hootsuite - Create embedable coloumn
Groups coloumn
You can create a coloumn where you create a group and add specific members. Now, here’s where I think Hootsuite still has some work to do: I would expect to be able to add users to a group from a few clicks, something like “ADD members from the LIST OF TWITTER USERS YOU FOLLOW”. But Hootsuite lets you manually add a Twitter user so you’d have to remember the Twitter usernames you’d like to add to the group. That’s a minus.
Hootsuite - Add members to group

I did enjoy using Hootsuite and might be the best Twitter application which fits my needs. I’d be more than happy what was your experience with Hootsuite 2.0, below in the comments section.

Thanks for this. Pretty basic overview of my current fave twitter client, something I can point my clients to when they ask questions. More and more I’m pointing them to Hootsuite as the best available way to manage the firehose of info that their twit-stream is going to direct at them.

Before Hoot 2.0 I was having fun with Nambu, but it started to get very crashy. I don’t like the limitations of tweetdeck. Now, w/ 2.0 Hoot I get to do almost everything I could w/ Nambu – except on one thing (basic basic basic): autocompletion feature.
